This first week of the Christmas Season we will be focusing on Christmas Songs & Stories. Songs & Stories are part of our normal routine, allowing for a smoother transition into the Christmas season which can be an overwhelming time for some neurodiverse (and neurotypical!) kiddos.
I will be using this week to introduce a story and song the boys will perform as part of our family’s Christmas Eve traditions and a French storybook to explore over a number of weeks as part of out multilingual education.
This blog post is an overview of my intentions for the week ahead and will provide a backbone for activities and further exploration (if requested by the children).
The Little Match Girl
This will be our Christmas Eve performance piece: The Little Match Boys. We will read an abridged version of the story and use it as a discussion point regarding kindness to others. We will also do some artwork inspired by themes from the story.
Le loup qui n’aimait pas Noël
This is our French story for the season we will be reading this story and do some related activities from Majoes and Twinkl. We will be developing our French reading comprehension skills, building our Christmas vocabulary and writing letters to Père Noël!
The Nativity Story
Christmas is a Christian holiday, so I think it’s important that the boys learn about the religious context behind the day. We will be doing related activities in both English and French.
We Wish You A Merry Christmas
We love easy and fun Christmas songs like this one. I will also be setting the boys a challenge to design their own wrapping paper inspired by one of their favourite Christmas songs!
The Holly & The Ivy
In our Exploring Nature with Children curriculum the first week of December is Christmas Plants – we will be learning about evergreens and looking at the poem/song ‘The Holly & The Ivy’.
