“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”
– Samuel Johnson

London, a multicultural hub known for it’s rich history, is a popular tourist destination, with around 30 million visitors each year. More than grey skies and concrete buildings my hometown was the original inspiration for this blog. Sharing affordable family days out in the city we used to call home.

Here are 5 things you should know about travelling in London:

#1 – Oyster Cards
Get an Oyster Card as soon as you arrive, it will save you a lot of money and time. Just don’t forget to top it up! While you’re at it, take advantage of TfL’s Journey Planner to plan your journeys around London or download their free TfL Go app.

#2 – What To Wear
While London has an amazing accessible public transport system, you will soon regret not bringing comfortable walking shoes. Also pack plenty of layers to wear, it’s not unheard of to experience all four seasons in one day!

#3 – Left or Right?
Stay on the right when on the escalators and make sure to look both ways before crossing the road. There’s nothing more frustrating to Londoners than a tourist blocking the escalators on their morning commute.

#4 – Freebies
There is a lot of free stuff to take advantage of in London. Parks, gardens, city farms (yes we have farms!) and most museums are free. Walking is free and there are plenty of places to do that – Camden, Borough Market, Chelsea and Shoreditch to name a few.

#5 – Tipping
You can tip, if you want. But it’s not really a done thing and it definitely isn’t expected. People are paid a minimum wage and a service charge is usually added to your bill.
